The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom Of The Opera
Austin, Texas
Bass Concert Hall
February 21, 2004

This musical need no introduction. Everyone who is anyone must know or heard of this masterpiece in the musical theater. You don’t need to be a musical fanatic to know "The Phantom Of The Opera" If I were to go into detail about this musical, I would never finish writing this review.
On hand to view this "Opera", were Henry, Miguel, Hector, Louie, Monica and myself. The music, scenery, lighting, the cast, the choreography was exceptional. My favorite scenes are at the beginning when the remnants of a chandelier are revealed in an auction and rebuild itself to its grand splendor and slowly rises to the ceiling of the theater as the music plays.
My other favorite scene is at the end of Act I, When The Phantom emerges from his hiding place where he has heard Christine agree to leave with Raoul that night and vows vengeance and has the chandelier crash down from the ceiling as Christine and the cast take their bow at the end of a play they were performing.
I cannot forget to mention the end of Act II, when Christine is pleading to The Phantom to spare Raoul's life. The Phantom then tells her, "You’ve tried my patience, make your choice!" Christine then kisses The Phantom as the orchestra music fills the theater and the audience is in aww!! The Phantom then pulls her away and the audience waits on the edge of their seats to see what he is going to do. The Phantom then sets Raoul free and tells them to leave. Christine then returns alone to give back the ring that The Phantom had given her, and he sings to her....Christine I love you......" and she runs back to Raoul leaving The Phantom crying inconsolably. He then finishes the scene singing "You alone can make my song take flight... Its over now the music of the of the night." He then sits on his throne and covers himself with the cape as a mob of people are looking for him to seek vengeance. The cape is then removed from the throne only to find his mask and The Phantom nowhere in site. Lights out and curtains down. Applause, Applause!!!!!

Kiss Me Kate

Kiss Me Kate Feb. 09, 2004
Reviewed by: Juan, Monica and Miguel

One of the all-time great Musicals sparkles with wit and romance. This musical comedy is a classic battle of the sexes centered around a production of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. The two lead actors of the show are a divorced couple, who are always fighting backstage but the arguing and fighting does not stop there. It continues during the their performance every night and the other cast have to ad-lib their way through the show in order to save it, leaving you laughing of the predicament. The lead actor Dexter James Brigham had a musical voice that would have you melt in your seat. The lead actress Emily Herring was just as great with her operatic voice.

Kiss me Kate, a winner of 5 Tony awards including Best Musical and Best Score with unforgettable songs by Cole Porter, is a musical we will never forget anytime soon.

Glenn Miller Orchestra

Glenn Miller Orchestra (Brownsville) Jacob Brown Feb. 07,2004
There was a bigger turn out than I expected. The orchestra which consisted of 19 musicians played a number of wonderful of tunes such as Pennsylvania 6-5000, Sunrise Serenade, A string Of Pearls, Chattanooga Choo -Choo, Moonlight Cocktail, and the list goes on. In attendance to this event were Juan, Monica, Miguel, and Ursula. The audience consisted people of all ages who listened to music of Americas yesteryear. My friend Ursula commented to me during the concert, how they lacked a dance floor to have the audience strut their stuff to these classic tunes. Which I thought was a wonderful idea. We did have one couple get up and dance as the crowd cheered them on. It was a great evening to sit back, relax and enjoy the music of a great legend Glenn Miller, who will remain in America’s heart till the end of time.

Believe it or not, Brownsville has culture! We’re coming up in the world. UTB / TSC arts and Entertainment is in it’s third season. The season opened October 3, 2003 with its first production Rigoletto,. an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. Everyone and anyone who wanted to be seen and known were there. The turn out was better than expected but the Jacob Brown Auditorium has plenty of room for more supporters.

Harlingen Arts and Entertainment Division is now in it’s seventh year! Opening their season with The Music Man November 23, 2003. A musical in two acts with a traveling con man turned conductor comes to a town named River City to start a marching band. He, without any music experience wins the hearts of the town people and children. An eight time Tony Award winning musical. The music is something you will never forget.

Brownsville continued their season with their yearly rendition of Messiah performed December 2nd, 2003 by local talented singers. This yearly performance is not missed by the families of our own local talent, who do a great job bringing this Christmas magic to life.

January 13th, 2004 was the evening for Seussical "The Musical" in Harlingen. The theater was filled with children and adults alike. Everyone grew up with Dr Seuss storybooks, well now put into music. Everyone went back to his or her childhood years. One phrase I will hold dear to my heart that came out in song,.... a person's a person no matter how small, aperson's a person no matter how small. (clutching pearls and tissue to eyes sniff, sniff)

Back to Brownsville. January 16th 2004 Singing in the Rain, a classical movie turned musical. Hollywood in the twenties the music, the costumes, the choreography of the dances is something never to forget. The highlight of the evening was at the end of Act I when “Don” the principal actor is leaving Kathy’s house. There’s thunder and lightning. The stage lights are dimmed and the scene changes to the street outside Kathy’s house. The stage is lit with a faint blue light then you start hearing rain. The stage lights are slowly raised and lord and behold it is actually raining on stage!! The music starts “Singing in the rain”, There is a great applause as he sings and splashes in the puddles on the stage. That was the talk during intermission. People on their cell phones calling their friends/family at what they had just seen. Hooray! for UTB / TSC Arts and Entertainment Entertainment for bringing some culture to our beautiful sleeping town Brownsville. Until next time.

I will be enjoying and reviewing The Glen Miller Orchestra February 7th, 2004 at Jacob Brown Auditorium, Kiss me Kate February 9th 2004 at Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, and a group of Speak Your Mind members will be heading to Austin TX to the Bass Concert Hall to see The Phantom of the Opera February 21, 2004. It will be my sixth time to see it. I’ve already seen it at the Bass Concert Hall on February 11, 1998. I can hardly wait. Every time I see it, It’s as if I’m seeing it for the first time. Ciao, for now...
Juan
