Here I added some comments from the Queer as Folk Message board:

re: Do you encourage your straight friends and family to watch QAF?

I watch with my husband. What's really disconcerting is that his *mother* also watches and often wants to discuss the episodes with me *g*

My oldest son is the one who turned me onto this show. Your mom may just surprise you.

My friend at work has to hear all about it, she should just watch it. LOL.

I got my Mom and Dad watching it. LOL

re: Do you encourage your straight friends and family to watch QAF?

I am straight and yes, I encourage my friends and family to watch. I got one of my daughters to watch it and she loves it but so far my other daughter and husband aren't interested. I must admit, I was curious so I rented the first disc of season one a couple of years ago and was shocked at first. However I soon fell in love with the characters and because of the show, I have come to feel as comfortable viewing same-sex sex as I am with hetero sex. With people this beautiful I think I like it even better!

re: Do you encourage your straight friends and family to watch QAF?

I am straight and i have tried to talk my friends and family into watching it. My best friend, Justin, is gay and he turned me onto it. He is the only other person besides myself that i know who actually watches it. It seems my other friends and family are not really open-minded enough to watch it, although i have tried to lend them my dvd's. Obviously, they have no idea what they are missing

I managed to hook my mother-in-law & her sister on it. But I turn three shades of red when we talk about it. I also had an actual nightmare that my MIL would ask me to explain rimming. LOL!

re: Do you encourage your straight friends and family to watch QAF?

Chering--Glad to see that straight people like you can get past the graphic sex scenes and topics and focus on the story. There's hope in this world for us after all!.

And BarrelFEVER, glad you like my suggestions. Will and Grace is OK. It's geared more to straight people, I think. It may help straight people be more accepting of gay people. At best, it is a gay show for newly-out people who have just figured out they are gay. But they don't really tackle any toipics that would be all that relevant to a gay person. Heck--Will never even dates, and acts a bit too stereotypical. Neither he nor Jack are good role models for young gay people. Give your friend the QAF season 1 DVD and let him watch it on his own, at his own pace. He'll be so greatful to you. And, I guarantee you, he'll send for season two before he even finishes watching season 1.
A much less graphic, but pretty realistic movie avail on DVD at Blockbuster and other DVD places is the movie "All over the Guy". It portrays 2 gay men who each have a straight best friend (one with a woman and one with a man), so the friends set them up on a blind date. It's funny and touching as the guys try to develop a steady relationship, encountering some problems along the way way.
In any event, sounds like your friend is pretty lucky to have a supportive friend like you. He won't be offended. He'll be glad your are so accepting.
