Part X
An Ordinary Day

Jake stands up and looks towards the ceiling as he closes his eyes tightly.  He cannot believe that he is going to be the father to Tricia's expected baby.  "Tricia, are you sure?  I mean are you really really sure about this pregnancy?" asks Jake.  "I took the pregnancy test three times Jake.  All three times, it, it....." says Tricia as she starts to cry.  Tricia asks, "What are we going to do?"  "I don't know.  I really don't know what we are going to do.  Are you sure that I am the only one?  I mean, well, you know what I mean?" asks Jake.  "You have been the only one I've been intimate with in a very long time.  That night at your condo after University Day was the last time I had sex." responds Tricia.   "I've always thought about being a father, but not this quickly." says Jake.  At this time Luke was leaning against the wall by the hall in tears and his lips were shaking.  He can not believe how  quick a beginning to something beautiful can come to an end in a heartbeat.  Luke wipes his tears.  He takes a deep breath.   Luke walks towards Jake and Tricia.  "Hey Tricia." says Luke.  "Hi." responds Tricia.  Luke and Jake stare at each other.  There is total silence in the room.  A pin drop can be heard.  "Jake, you do what you have to do.  Do not put me before this without really thinking about it.  You and Tricia need to talk and I mean really talk about this because it is a decision that will  impact your life - all of our lives.  It has already.  I know how much of a responsible human being you are.  That is why I love you.  I will always love you." exclaims Luke.  Jake cries and embraces Luke.  They hug each other for a long time as Tricia turns around to wipe her tears.  She is confused and does not know what to say next.  "Luke, you are such a wonderful friend to Jake and to me." says Tricia.  Luke holds Jake's face with his hands, "You will always be in my thoughts.  You will always be a part of my  soul.  No matter what, you will always have a special place in my heart that will always have your name on it." Jake is sobbing as Luke speaks to him.  "Luke!" says Jake as Luke tells him to hush.  "What we have shared are moments that I will hold in my heart for a lifetime.  I will never ever forget our time at the beach. Thank you for showing me true love and what it is to really love profoundly. I will always love you Jake Raimins." says the professor as he gives Luke one soft kiss on his lips. Luke begins to walk towards the door as Jake shouts out, "Luke, wait - Luke, Luke....thank you.  Thank you. I love you too Luke Robins.  I too, will always love you."  Luke walks out and gets into his truck and drives away as Tricia and Jake look out the window.  "What just happened here?"  asks Tricia.  "In a nut shell, Luke and Miranda are going to split up. Today was a new beginning for us." says Jake.   Tricia looks at Jake and states, "I kind of sort of knew, but I did not know it was this extreme between the both of you.  Wow!  "Tell me about it.  This is just an ordinary day." responds Luke.   Tricia gets a call from her sister.  Tricia is going to go home and tell them about the pregnancy.  Jake asks Tricia if she wants for him to go with her.  Tricia says no.  After Tricia leaves Jake decides to go on a bicycle ride to relieve his stress and frustrations.  He has mixed feelings about the pregnancy and Professor Robins.

As Luke drives home he is doing deep thinking about Miranda, Jake and the pregnancy.  Never in his life has Luke been so devastated.  He has an affair behind his wife's back.  He falls in love with another a man, a student of his.  He puts his career in jeopardy.  His wife has an affair behind his back as well.  The man he falls in love is going to father a baby.  Even if Jake and Tricia don't marry, still, there will always be the bond between Luke and Tricia.  Luke does not want to be a burden to the child.  Luke is confused.  He loves Jake so much that he cannot hold him down to a relationship or a commitment he cannot commit too 100%.  He does not know what to do.  He continues to drive and decides to go to the beach.

As Jake rides his bicycle, he is thinking on how he is going to confront Pat for writing the love letter to Luke.  Even though Miranda never saw or read it, it brought grief, pain, stress and endless sleepless nights to Luke and to Jake.  He is riding so fast he is starting to work up a sweat quickly.  He is riding along the beach side.  The cliff seems to get steeper with each pedal.  As he is zooming up the cliff he can't help but to notice something on the side of the road.  He reaches it and stops.  What is that?  The night is pitch dark and there is little light that reflects from the moon.  Better yet, "Who is this?" asks Jake to himself.  "Hello! Are you ok?" asks Jake as he walks closer to the body.  It is a body of a female.  She is wearing ripped clothes and seems to be in some kind of pain.  "Miss, have you been hurt? Are you ok?" asks Jake.  He gets on his knees and reaches out for the woman and turns her head slightly.  He removes her hair from her face. Jake turns pale and begins to shout out, "No! No! How can this be? Nooooo! Help! Help!  Oh my God! Jasmine.  Jasmine. Jasmine! Can you hear me? No! No! Oh my God No. Not my sister. Jake is extremely in a whirlwind of confusion because Jasmine is suppose to be in Pittsburgh. What is she doing along the side of a beach side road, on a cliff in the outskirts of Freeville.  Jake gets his cell and calls 911.

A few days later Jake is at his apartment getting ready to go visit his sister at the hospital.  Jeff has made breakfast for the both of them and has left for work.  Paul and Allen arrive at Jake's apartment.  They are going to go with Jake to visit his sister Jasmine at the hospital.  Jake explains to Paul and Allen what happened to Jasmine.  Apparently, Jasmine had left Pittsburgh to spend some time with her family before Thanksgiving.  She wanted to surprise her parents, Jake and Jeff so she did not call them.  She had left a message on her answering machine that she was out of town at a convention and that she would return her phone calls as soon as she returned.  No one knew of here whereabouts.  Jasmine told the police, doctors and her family about her brutal captivity at the barn outside of town.  She explained to them how she was tortured, beaten, raped over and over again for days. When Jasmine arrived in town, she was waiting for a taxi outside the bus station.  She called for a taxi but it never arrived. Since it was getting late she was very anxious to arrive at her parents house.  A kind and courteous man offered her a ride and she accepted.  Who would've known that the kind and courteous man was going to be the monster that would change her life upside down and scar her physically and emotionally forever.

At the hospital Jake's parents are with Jasmine.  She is in good spirits and eager to go home.  Thanksgiving is a few days away.  She thanks God for being safe, sound and alive.  She has received several floral arrangements from friends and family.  She is counting the hours to be released.  After visiting for about an hour and a half, Paul, Allen and Jake decide to go have lunch.  Jake kisses Jasmine and tells her that he'll return as soon as they finish eating.  He says goodbye to his parents.  They leave the room and as they are about to enter the elevator, Jake receives a phone call.  "Jake, It's Miranda, Miranda Robins.  There has been an accident with Luke.  Please meet me at the third beach access after The Beach Front Hotel." says Miranda.  "What happened? How's Luke? Is he ok? Tell me Miranda?" asks Jake with a jittery voice.

Jake, Paul and Allen arrive at the scene. There are four police cars, three sheriff cars, two fire engines and an ambulance.  The police do not let Paul and the boys get close to the marked off area.  Miranda was at the bottom of the cliff with the police.  "What happened?  Sir, please tell me what happened?" asks Jake to the police officer.  "I'm not at liberty to share information at this time young man." replied the police office.  "I asked what the hell happened? Tell me. Tell me now!" exclaimed Jake as he grabbed the police officer by his collar.  "He's my best friend. He's my professor.  He's my... my...." he cries, "he's just my friend officer.  Tell me he's ok?" cries Jake.  "I'm sorry son.   He lost control of his truck and drove off the cliff.  The truck landed at the bottom and it exploded upon impact.  We were able to find the license plate a few feet from the horrible accident.  We can only assume it is Luke Robins." replies the officer.  "Is he? Is he?" asks Jake.   "We have not found the body.  We just don't know at this time.  Why don't you just go on home.  Go home son." replied the officer.  Jake turns around as Paul places his arm around him and walk towards the car.

Later that evening, Jake wakes up from a little nap.  He sits on the bed and remises of the fond memories of Luke and him.  These have been the best four months of his entire life.  He then calls Tricia to see how she is doing.  He gets into the shower.  As he is showering he begins to cry. "Why?  Why?  Why?" as he bangs the bathroom walls.   As he showers he hears his cell phone.  He gets out of the shower and quickly dries off.  He notices that it is Miranda that called.  Jake returns the call as quickly as he can.  "Miranda? This is Jake." he answers.  "I need for you to come to the house Luke.  There is something I have to tell you." replies Miranda.  Jake gets dressed and quickly begins to drive to Luke and Miranda's house.

Jake arrives at Miranda's house.  She hugs him.  "How are you doing Miranda?" asks Jake.  "I'm so devastated.  This is the worse day in my life." replies Mrs. Robins.  Jake and Miranda find it awkward being together without Luke present.  Jake has no idea what it is she wants to tell him. "Please, take a seat Jake,  I'm not sure how much Luke told you but I know he must of had mentioned something to you. I know of his attraction towards you and vice versa.  I also know that you are aware that Luke is a wonderful painter.  He is a talented artist.  He has always taken pride in his artwork.  He always shows me his work.  Well, one day I was cleaning the bedroom and I came across one of his paintings.  I was amazed by it.  It is a beautiful painting.  The funny thing is that he had it hidden in his closet.  That is when I realized that he liked you. I didn't call you here to judge you.  Jake, I want for you to have the painting because I know that Luke would've given it to you sooner or later.  Here it is." says Miranda. Jake takes the painting and removes the cover.  It is a painting of Jake painted by Luke.  "Oh my god.  This is so perfect." says Jake with teary eyes.  "I don't know what to say. It looks just like me.  Thank you Miranda, I, don't know how to thank you enough for giving me this painting and I will treasure it.  I just want to tell you that I never meant to cause any problems between the both of you.  Honestly, I didn't." says Jake.  Miranda walks to Jake and hugs him. "No harm done.  You're a fine man. You have a long life in front of you.  And I heard you are going to be a father. Congratulations!  Well, I guess that is all I had to tell you. As for me,  I have a memorial service to plan. I have a memorial to plan for......." they hug each other again.  Jake walks outside and places the painting in the back seat of his car.  As he drives home, he looks at it through the rear view mirror while listening to James Blunt "Goodbye My Lover" on the radio.

Did I disappoint you or let you down?

Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?

'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,

Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.

So I took what's mine by eternal right.

Took your soul out into the night.

It may be over but it won't stop there,

I am here for you if you'd only care.

You touched my heart you touched my soul.

You changed my life and all my goals.

And love is blind and that I knew when,

My heart was blinded by you.

I've kissed your lips and held your head.

Shared your dreams and shared your bed.

I know you well, I know your smell.

I've been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.

Goodbye my friend.

You have been the one.

You have been the one for me.

I am a dreamer but when I wake,

You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.

And as you move on, remember me,

Remember us and all we used to be

I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.

I've watched you sleeping for a while.

I'd be the father of your child.

I'd spend a lifetime with you.

I know your fears and you know mine.

We've had our doubts but now we're fine,

And I love you, I swear that's true.

I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.

Goodbye my friend.

You have been the one.

You have been the one for me

And I still hold your hand in mine.

In mine when I'm asleep.

And I will bear my soul in time,

When I'm kneeling at your feet.

Goodbye my lover.

Goodbye my friend.

You have been the one.

You have been the one for me.

I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.

I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.

It is Thanksgiving day and Jake's parents house is filled with family and friends. The aroma of turkey, mash potatoes, corn, stuffing and all the trimmings fill the house. Jasmine is baking peach cobbler, cherry and banana pies. Paul shows up with chocolate covered strawberries. Jake is in the living room looking out the window. It is a cool day and the snow has melted away. The sun wants to peek through the clouded skies. After a delicious Thanksgiving meal and after Jake assists with the dishes and cleaning up, he decides to go to the beach side. He wants some down time alone.

As he arrives at the beach, he gets a piece of paper and writes the following in his car.

Luke,

You came into my life at the time when I needed a special friend the most. You showed me what kind of a compassionate person you were. I saw you. I fell in love. Whether it was wrong or right, I still fell in love with you. Not a day goes by when I do not think of you. I long to hear your words. I long to feel your touch. I long to feel your lips with mine. But most of all, I long to be loved by you. Though we are now apart, I will never ever let you go. I will never let you go. I miss you. I need you. But I will not be greedy because you are in a place where you will have more than you ever did. Can you see me? I can't see you, but I can imagine you. As long as God grants me a memory, you will be alive.

Love,
Jake R.

Jake rolls the paper and ties it with a string. He then places the letter inside a glass bottle and throws it out to sea. "See you someday my friend." says Jake.
"See you someday!"

"Hello sir! I'm looking for a nice pen with black ink, preferably with a felt tip." asks the young man at the counter." The receptionist responds, "Of course, I have one more left and for only $ 6.99. Would you like to purchase it?" "Yes!" replies the customer. "Thank you for shopping at my antique bookstore and enjoy the Island of Corsica, France." says the receptionist. Out walks the young man and walks to a table facing the beach front.

Today is Thursday, November 22, 2007. It is a beautiful day in Corsica, France. I have been here for about two weeks. The people are very friendly, unlike other places I've visited in the past. It is a sunny day and the breeze is simply divine. This is my first journal. I really like this pen I bought today. It writes wonderful. I think I am going to enjoy writing a lot more. I have new people to meet. A new life to live. I am alone for now. I am not here to seek anyone, but to find myself again. I was once married and in love with two people. What a life. I am now in Corsica, France, a beautiful island which is considered one of the world's largest islands. I am here now. The world once knew a man by the name of Luke Robins. Goodbye Mr. Robins and welcome Jason Stevens. I am both those men! I have left my painful past and I will start anew. Until tomorrow my dear journal - I will simply have, An Ordinary Day!

THE END
